This RPG uses an open system in which characters use a self-declared area of endeavor. The only time that a character is tied to a specific classification is within the context of pursuing Sorcery, Invocation, Shamanism, Thaumaturgy, and Necromancy, in which absolute loyalty must be sworn to a guild. Other instances that require absolute allegiance such as employment by a corporation, the Federation, or an organized crime syndicate will restrict a character to a specific classification. Beyond those instances, characters are free to pursue whatever occupation or area of endeavor is desired.
A freelance paramilitary operative, the Jackal specializes in undermining and crippling government infrastructure. Whether they work for another government, a corporation, or a wealthy benefactor, they sell themselves to the highest bidder and execute their missions with efficiency and anonymity.
The classic soldier of fortune, the merc charges into heated scenarios with guns blazing. While many mercs are disillusioned former military men, others are desperate individuals who have found that the only way to prosperity is by following the way of the gun. For the few who survive such an inherently dangerous trade, the payoff is notoriety and generous earnings.
In a world that has had its transportation infrastructure crippled, the smuggler has enjoyed the payoff for being in high demand. Whether he his hauling rockets or diapers, medicine or human cargo, the smuggler will get whatever is needed for whoever is willing to pay the price. He commands a hefty premium for his services, but the cargo is guaranteed to be delivered on time and without bullet holes.
An enthusiast for anything that has an engine, the vehicle specialist is an incurable gearhead that prides himself on the ability to adeptly take command of any vehicle. In addition to being the daring captain of land, sea, and air, many gearheads are implanted with cybernetic enhancements that allow them to directly interface with vehicles. Many are also skilled in the use of remote controlled sentry vehicles and emplacements.
The ranger is the uncontested master of the wilderness. While most of mankind has gathered within dense megapolises, clinging to what remains of civilization, the ranger blazes his own trail and ventures forth undaunted into uncharted territory. Typically a solitary individual, most have little concern for the governments that have become hopelessly corrupt and the societies that have crumbled.
The mage is a studious and scholarly practitioner of magic. Most are consumed with the pursuit of knowledge and discovering the mysteries of the astral realm and metakinetic energy. Their studies are not without reward. The mage commands the greatest repertoire of spells of any magic user.
The shaman is a highly spiritual magic user that has developed an innate empathy with Gaea. As such, their powers are primarily related to the Earth and the natural environment. The shaman is the only class of magic user that is able to shape shift.
Crusaders are Invocationist that derive all of their ability to perform magical feats from the supreme being that they serve. Due to the fact that they invoke their powers from an external source, crusaders do not have to study magical skills. Therefore, they are able to focus on developing other skills. This freedom empowers many crusaders to become formidable soldiers. As servants of their higher power, crusaders are bound to fight against the forces of darkness and tyranny.
The thaumaturgist is a magic user that is primarily concerned with acquiring great power and wealth and use their powers to that end. Within their guilds, they are groomed as future rulers and their magic focuses on the ability to control other beings for the purpose of fulfilling their commands. Thaumaturgists are also able to summon minions from the underworld to wage their war on Earth.
The necromancer is a magic user that focuses on powers that deal with death and the undead. These morbid practitioners weave their craft from the shadows and are able to animate the dead. Due to the nature of their realm, necromancers tend to be solitary individuals.
The renegade finds solace on the road with the wind in his hair and the rumble of his steel steed. He answers to no one and lives by his own code. Self-indulgent and reckless, he values his freedom above all else.
In a time when megacorporations cannibalize each other and push for survival by any means necessary, the corporate operative is their greatest asset. A deniable asset, operatives are given the most sensitive and secretive assignments and frequently alter the course of global business. In order to become an operative of renown, one must have nerves of steel and be a cunning master of social engineering.
Whether used by small governments, corporations, private armies, organized crime syndicates, or paramilitary groups, weapons have become the tools of diplomacy in the 22nd century. With the surge in militant activity and the limited supply of weaponry, the black market has never been stronger. While their trade is extremely risky, arms dealers accumulate a great deal of wealth by procuring weapons by any means necessary and delivering them to whatever client is willing to pay the premium.
The rogue is a master of the inner streets of the megapolis. Their primary goal is to simply survive and, while it is doubtful that a rogue will ever attain great wealth, they are able to do quite well harvesting credits from denizens of the urban jungle. The most successful rogues work as information brokers, fixers, or thieves.
Loyalty is the rarest commodity in this day and age. With few to trust and with limited means to get by, many have turned to the Mafia. In fact, never before has there been such a widespread resurgence of organized crime. Mafia families have been organized within every ethnicity in existence. In areas without homogenous ethnic groups, sharing a common ethnic background has often ceased to be a requirement to join a family.
In the shadows of the skyscrapers that tower above the megapolis, the PIs discretely set out to do their work. While most of their objectives involve doing legwork for wealthy plutocrats, they will occasionally do jobs for a corp. Most corporate executives have a short list of private dicks that they use for personal jobs that need to remain under the radar. On extremely rare occasion, a PI might even do some pro bono work for a worthy cause.
The ronin is a samurai without a master, a soldier without a general. A master practitioner of the martial arts, these solitary individuals lurk among the shadows and prefer darkness to the light of day. To these honorable warriors, to live without purpose is to live in shame. While some may resort to doing contract work, most will either seek out new allegiances or set out to further some virtuous cause.
This cyber sleuth is able to navigate the grid seamlessly. Aside from natural technical aptitude and years behind a console, any hacker worth his salt is armed to the teeth with programs capable of crippling information systems, hijacking control systems, and snatching data. While they tend to be somewhat ineffective in meatspace due to their imbalance, a good hacker can be a ruthless adversary in cyberspace.
In a nation that is being ripped apart by crime and assaulted by Darkspawn, the federal officer is judge, jury, and executioner. A member of the law enforcement branch of the Federal United Armed Forces, this individual is the only thing that stands between civilization and chaos. Fortunately, federal officers are well equipped to handle hostile encounters.
The bounty hunter is an expert at locating and capturing human targets. An accomplished hunter will receive contracts from various clientele to track down such subjects as corporate employees who have gone defected with sensitive information, federal agents who have gone AWOL, or nefarious criminals who are at large. At times, it is required that the subject is to remain unharmed. Other times, the bounty hunter is empowered to pursue the subject and neutralize with extreme prejudice. |
